Aldi Champagne

Client: Aldi

The 84 year old pensioner who became the unexpected star of Britain’s Favourite Ad last year is set to return in a Valentine’s commercial for grocery retailer Aldi, created by McCann Manchester.

Jean Jones from Darlington featured in McCann Manchester’s multi-award winning Aldi Tea commercial and became famous for the deadpan declaration, “I don’t like tea, I like gin.”

The ad was voted Britain’s favourite of 2011 in a survey of more than two million consumers conducted by market research company Nielsen.

The new commercial featuring Jean and created by McCann Manchester under the Like Brands, Only Cheaper campaign airs this week and will be promoting Aldi’s own brand Champagne.

The spot shows Jean in an upmarket restaurant saying that her husband likes champagne and highlights he is partial to a leading brand of champagne as well as Aldi’s own brand champagne, before she goes on to declare that she doesn’t like her husband but prefers handsome young waiters instead

The commercial was created by McCann Manchester Executive Creative Director Dave Price and Creative Director Neil Lancaster and was directed by Giorgio Brunei and produced by Lucy Moore.

The work is the latest in a series of commercials that have helped propel Aldi to a record market share of the UK grocery market and drive 42% sales growth in the past year as well as winning an IPA Effectiveness Gold and more than twenty other creative and effectiveness awards in the past twelve months.

Commenting on the new work, McCann Manchester Managing Partner Simon Buchanan said, “Jean was a natural choice for a Valentine’s special and hopefully she’ll find a place in the nation’s hearts in the same way she did when she was promoting tea.”
