There is a new book out by Gestalten on ‘The Design Ethos of Dieter Rams’, an absolute must buy.

If you’ve been to this site before, spoken to us or worked with SomeOneElse, you’ll know that we’re permanently on this ‘branding behaviour‘ tip, and are also on a mission to design experiences that are the brand and not this surface mounted, stick a logo on it colour it in lark. You’ll also know how much we love design that ‘just works’.

Personally, having studied Product Design at Brunel – a course which was steeped in Bauhaus philosophy – it’s inevitable, if a bit clichéd, for me to love Dieter.

However, what I love in this interview is where he talks about the use of colour, saying he was always very careful. “Sometimes it’s more important to have a yellow push button which tells you something… Design should not dominate people, it should help people.”

Here, here.

Hear that shouty brands? Stop dominating, start helping, start being useful.

Here’s an interview:

What a hero.

Here’s the book blurb from Gestalten, and here’s a link to go buy it.

In over 40 years at Braun, Dieter Rams established himself as one of the most influential designers of the 20th century. His elegantly clear visual language not only defined product design for decades, but also our fundamental understanding of what design is and what it can and should do. Elucidating the design philosophy of Dieter Rams, Less and More is the ultimate collection of images of all of Rams’s products as well as selected sketches and models. In addition to the complete visual presentation of his designs, new texts by international experts reevaluate his work in a contemporary context.
