Following the success of a Tesco initiative in South Korea which had products and barcodes printed on billboards, the ‘Come home to a full fridge’ idea was to trial interactive digital screens allowing customers to scan and buy grocery products on their smartphones at Gatwick before their holiday and have their items delivered when they returned. The store, featuring two giant fridges and an 8 foot bottle of milk, will be at Gatwick’s North terminal for two weeks and the plan is to take the store to further events and locations across the UK.
Senior Marketing Manager for Tesco.com, Mandy Minichiello, said:
“As a busy working mum of two, I know that planning holidays can be stressful. The last thing you want is an empty fridge when you get back. When we came up with the idea for the virtual store at Gatwick, we really wanted to provide a helpful service for busy families. You can book a delivery slot up to three weeks in advance, do a full grocery shop while waiting for a flight and it’ll be delivered to your home when you get back.”
